BACTERIA
Bacterial analysis can be performed on air samples with Impact Plates and the appropriate agar.  Water samples can be submitted in sterile containers or ``Whirl-Pacs" containing sodium thiosulfate to neutralize the chlorine.  Bulk material can be sampled with sterile swabs.  Samples need to be shipped chilled near 2oC and if Federal Express or another outside agency is used, the samples should be sent overnight for the next morning delivery.  Sampling supplies may be ordered by contacting the Environmental Microbiology Lab at 1-800-220-3675.

EXAMPLE OF CASE SOLVED
Respiratory problems were being experienced in a four-story post office building.  EMSL requested air samples from the consultant hired to solve the problem for the client.  SEM revealed the dominant presence of bacteria with concentrations diminishing with increased floor level.  Conversations with the consultant revealed that pigeons socialized near the buildings AC system located outside the building at ground level.  EMSL requested a pigeon feather and was able to match the bacteria on the pigeon feather with the airborne bacteria within the building
